Book Review: “High Desert Haven” by Lynnette Bonner

June 21, 2012

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me. Psalm 23:4

If you’re looking for a great historical romance novel to kick off your summer reading, look no further. Lynnette Bonner’s new book, “High Desert Haven”, is sure to draw you in from the first page.

The high desert of Oregon was a rugged, desolate territory in 1887. It’s not an easy place for Nicki Trent to find herself, widowed with a toddler and another baby on the way. Not only was her husband killed in a mysterious accident, but the ranch he left her is rundown and barely hanging on financially. Just when it seems things can’t get any worse, the bank calls in a loan she didn’t know she had. Rather than give in to the questionable proposal of her neighbor William, she hires handsome Jason Jordan to help her make the ranch profitable again. This turns out to be a good move not only for the ranch, but for Nicki’s heart.

Mysterious things continue to happen, causing Nicki to wonder if she’s doing the right thing, and if Jason is really who he claims to be. “High Desert Haven” is filled with romance, danger, and a strong spiritual message.

I love the gradual development of the romance in this book. Nicki had been married against her will at a young age, providing her with a strength of character that sees her through the trials she faces in this story. If you’ve read Lynnette’s first book, “Rocky Mountain Oasis”, you already met Jason as a less-than-upstanding citizen. His spiritual journey in that book led him to become the man of God we get to know here. Having read that book first, and knowing what he’s been through made me root for him even more.

This book will appeal not only to fans of historical romance, but to anyone who enjoys tales of the wild old west.

This is book 2 in Lynnette’s Shepherd’s Heart series. Although the books share some of the same characters, their stories stand alone, and don’t necessarily have to be read in order.

Book 1, “Rocky Mountain Oasis”, is available in paperback:
