Book Review: “Hollywood Nobody” by Lisa Samson

April 18, 2013

hollywood nobody 250

Everybody’s an actor in Hollywood, and I mean that literally. Sometimes I wonder if any of them even know who they are deep down in that corner room nobody else is allowed into. But I wonder the same thing about myself.

Scotty Dawn is a 15-year-old girl with an unusual lifestyle. Due to her mom’s job as a movie food stylist, the pair travels the country in the RV they call home. Scotty is a self-directed homeschooler who devotes a good deal of her time to updating her very popular blog. She writes insider information on actors and actresses, including rants and kudos. It’s clear from the get-go that Scotty has some pretty strong ideas about how people should behave.

Not surprisingly, these ideas don’t always translate to her own life.

As Scotty faces the sometimes-interesting, but never exactly glamorous life on a movie location, she faces some big issues. What is her mom keeping hidden from her, and who is that mysterious man who keeps showing up?

I love great Young Adult fiction, and book one of the “Hollywood Nobody” series by Lisa Samson grabbed and held my interest. Her characters are rich and real, and while Scotty is on the mature end of the fifteen-year-old-girl spectrum, her style and insights ring true. I can relate to her confusion about relationships and self-esteem even as a…well, let’s just say as an adult woman.

Samson does a great job of keeping the big story questions fresh, resolving enough to keep us satisfied at the end, but hooking us to pick up book two in the series (“Finding Hollywood Nobody”). I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fun, well-written Young Adult fiction with a decided absence of vampires.

Oh, and Bri too. The later books in the series have a little more serious content, so you might want to read for approval for her.
