Book Review: “My Blue Havyn” by Lynnette Bonner

June 5, 2014

“Chelsea, there’s no way on God’s green earth I’m going to spend two weeks – fourteen miserable days! – with Levi Carter even if it is in Africa where he might, if God has any sense of justice, be eaten, one tiny bite at a time, by a pride of hungry lions.”

MyBlueHavynFinal

In My Blue Havyn, Lynnette Bonner skillfully weaves romance with a touch of danger against the vivid backdrop of Malawi, Africa. This is a novella, so the action moves along quickly, which is just right for a nice weekend read.

Havyn Jessup arrives at the airport, prepared to go on a building trip for her church but not prepared for Levi Carter, the man who once broke her heart, to be going as well.  Levi is now a successful movie star and is on the trip for two reasons; to promote his new film, and to win back Havyn.

Levi has just two weeks and 98 pages to convince Havyn that he was a fool to leave her for the bright lights of Hollywood. Will Havyn let her guard down long enough to hear his heart? I love that both characters are realistically guarded and vulnerable. I wanted them to get back together, and the building of a school provides a nice backdrop for their relationship struggles.

The secondary characters are well-developed and add interest to the story. My favorite aspect is the feeling of danger provided by the presence of a gang-like group called Nyau. They oppose the presence of Americans and the building of the school, and use devious tactics to make their point. Landmines and masked gunmen are an ever-present threat to the crew.

Overall, this is a satisfying romance that will make you feel like you’ve traveled to an exotic land. Grab a cold drink and enjoy the trip!

Thanks, Lesley. I’m glad you enjoyed the story. The 2nd story in this series will be coming out in a Christmas compilation titled Mistletoe and Mochas later this year. It is Chelsea and Cannon’s story, and will be even shorter than this one. I’m learning to write concisely, these days! 😉

Thanks, Lynnette. I can’t wait! Soon, you’ll be writing flash fiction 🙂
