Book Review: “On the Wings of a Whisper” by Lynnette Bonner

April 14, 2016

A thrilling historical romance from the time of missionary explorer David Livingstone.

Stone Town, Zanzibar, Early 1866

RyAnne Hunter is determined to stop her father from leaving for the continent of Africa, where he plans to start a mission station. And she only has until morning. Tonight at the Harcourts’ Annual Ball will be her last chance to change his mind. She must succeed! Papa’s health, and her future, depend on her success. But, as if her task isn’t difficult enough, now the insufferable Captain Dawson has agreed to guide Papa’s expedition!

After spending six months at sea, Captain Trent Dawson only wants to think about rest and relaxation. However, when he’s recruited by a British naval officer to help put an end to a slave smuggling ring, the perfect opportunity presents itself in Dr. Hunter, who needs a guide to the Interior. Now if he can just help the doctor without spending too much time with the man’s troublesome and flighty youngest daughter.

Consider yourself warned. If you think you’re going to pick up ON THE WINGS OF A WHISPER—the first installment in Lynnette Bonner’s new historical Christian romance, “Sonnets of the Spice Isle”—and just read a few pages, you’d better rethink your plans. Once you get caught up in RyAnne and Trent’s tale, you’ll keep turning the pages until you run out of pages.

I will be the first to admit that I don’t read a lot of historical fiction. Don’t ask me why, because I adore history (and of course, I adore fiction). But having loved all four books in Lynnette’s “The Shepherd’s Heart” series, I knew I would love this new book too. Lynnette’s vivid descriptions not only transported me back to the 1860s, but all the way across the world to Zanzibar.

The heroine of this story, RyAnne Hunter, is no shrinking violet. In spite of, or perhaps due to, a strained relationship with her mother, RyAnne has developed a strong will. That will, combined with her fierce love for and devotion to her father, compels her to devise what appears to be a very foolhardy scheme. She must do whatever it takes to prevent him from leaving the family to set sail for what she fears will be his final expedition. Fortunately for her, handsome Trent Dawson is there to put a stop to her plans before she does something she’ll regret. But can he?

This is a fun opening installment of this serialized story, that hints of the adventures (and romance?) to come. Set aside some time and come aboard!
