Book Review: “Out on a Limb” by Gail Gaymer Martin

April 22, 2013

Is Karen Chapman willing to go out on a limb to follow God’s will for her life? That’s the question in Gail Gaymer Martin’s romance, “Out on a Limb”.

Karen has come to her recently widowed grandfather’s farm in Michigan to help him get back on his feet, and to sooth her city nerves. Her job as a child advocate is rewarding, but she’s had enough of the hopelessness and heartache she sees there. She’s ready for a major change, whether she knows it or not.

Enter Eric Kendall, Karen’s childhood pal and grandson of her grandfather’s next door neighbor. There’s an instant magnetism between the two as they re-meet as adults. Too bad there are so many obstacles in the way of their becoming more than just friends.

The obvious one is that Karen will be returning to her life in the city soon. She’s attracted to Eric, but he appears to her to be an unemployed womanizer who doesn’t share the Christian faith that is so important to Karen. Hardly worth altering her plans for.

Eric, on the other hand, realizes the poor impression he’s made on this woman whom he’d like to get to know better. He’s been somewhat secretive about his plans to open a business, wanting to be sure the details have fallen into place before he makes his announcement. Plus he recently ended a long term relationship, which makes him appear callous toward women. And an offhand remark about faith made him seem like he doesn’t take it seriously. Now, he has a lot of explaining to do if he wants to change Karen’s opinion of him.

The biggest obstacle appears to be an inexplicable decades old feud between their grandfathers. Will Karen and Eric come together to discover the reason for the anger between the men, and convince them to forgive?

This sweet romance is the kind of book you want to read in a porch swing with a glass of lemonade. It brings to mind summer and carefree living, in spite of some of its more serious overtones (Karen’s work with victims of domestic abuse is handled with a light, appropriate touch). I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a quick read with a satisfying ending.

This is also the kind of book that will make me want to move out of the city, right? Thanks for the review, I take friends’ recommendations for books more seriously than any other source. Nice to know when someone with similar tastes appreciates a book.

I’m ready to move to a farm. Not thinking about how much work that would be, though:)
