Book Review: “Talk of the Town” by Lisa Wingate

May 20, 2013

talk-of-the-town-250

I had a disquieting sense of something dark and life-altering hovering just beyond the sleepy, sun-drenched main street. The only explanation for my being sent on assignment to this middle-of-nowhere little burg was that my boss was setting me up for a full-scale F-5 disaster so she could fire me.

Welcome to Daily, Texas.

In “Talk of the Town”, Lisa Wingate brings to life this colorful place in a way that drew me in and made me feel like I was having coffee at the local diner, listening in as the story unfolded in front of me. Pass the sugar, Sugar. We’re in for some fun.

Television Associate Producer Mandalay Florentino arrives in town to prepare for the appearance of Amber Anderson, a finalist on a reality show called American Mega-star. Amber is an innocent country girl whom Mandalay worries will be tainted by the music business and her impending celebrity. As Mandalay prepares for the top secret home town reunion concert for the show, she realizes that Amber has gone missing.

The second point-of-view character is Imagene Doll, a grandmotherly Daily local who brings us right into the heart of Daily. From her, we see the perspective of the Daily residents who suspect that Amber has made the finals, and speculate about the strangers who have come to town. Not only the lovely “Amanda” (Imagene can’t understand why she pronounces her own name so strangely), but also a mysterious cowboy.

As potential romance brews between these two young out-of-towners, Mandalay worries about her job security. Will Amber show up for her own concert?

I loved this book, and Lisa’s clever writing style. She has a wonderful, creative way with words, and a delightful style that brings her characters to life. Their background is revealed bit by bit, without sliding into dull back story. Lisa paints a beautiful word picture that made me want to linger over sentences and re-read whole paragraphs to absorb the full beauty of her writing.

Talk of the Town will make you feel right at home.
