He has been in love with her for years, but he can’t let her get in the way of his divine calling as a pastor to plant a new church, can he?

Let’s take a trip down South and get to know Jan Thompson, author of the inspirational romance series, “Savannah Sweethearts”:

What inspired you to start writing?

When I was young, I saw my mother writing books that were never published. I began writing on an Olivetti typewriter when I was 8 years old. My love of reading came from my parents, and the more I read, the more I wanted to write my own books. So it began that way.

How do you measure your success as a writer?

As a Christian author, I feel that writing is a calling. If I fulfill the calling the Lord has given me, that’s success enough. As long as I please Him, I’m going to be okay.

“For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ” (Galatians 1:10).

What was the inspiration for your latest book?

My Savannah Sweethearts series is almost complete – five books down, three more to go – and I have enjoyed going to Savannah. Love that place and also the beaches of Tybee Island. I began writing this contemporary Christian romance series as a result of my research on colonial Georgia history for the historical romance genre I was writing a few years back. The characters in my Savannah Sweethearts and Seaside Chapel (set on St. Simon’s Island) are descendants of the characters in my colonial historical romance series that are still unfinished. You can say that those prequels are yet to come!

What are you currently working on?

I am writing Books 6-8 of the Savannah Sweethearts series, and Book 2 of the Seaside Chapel series.

Nice interview. I think many writers probably begin as readers. 😊 And I’m excited to see what you have to offer in historical fiction in the future.

I’m looking forward to the historicals too. I love the idea of linking a historical with a contemporary through the family tree. That’s a great way to encourage readers to try both genres.

Thank you, Lynnette and Lesley! Yes, the pressure of having to go back and finish writing up the family tree… I guess I won’t run out of things to write. LOL 🙂

Thank you, Lesley for the interview. I enjoyed it! So appreciate it!

Joelle – Thank you. I mentioned some of the history of the families in Share with Me (Seaside Chapel Book 1). There are 6 more books in that series to come. http://amzn.to/24xrLkL

I am writing this family saga in reverse chronological order, I guess. Stay tuned… 🙂

I enjoyed the interview. Jan’s desire to please the Lord is evident in her writing. I can’t wait for the historical fiction series to come out and live the idea that they are tied to the current books. I do not need to be in the drawing for the book.

Thank you so much, Carrie! Appreciate your kind words! God is good!

I was in Charleston recently checking out the area where it all began for some of these families. I do like to visit the places I write about. More to come… 🙂

I love hearing authors say they started at a young age. It’s so great when we actually follow our “bent” and do the thing we were meant to do! Best wishes on your writing!

That’s true, re: “bent.” I did take a 20-year detour into the computer field, but had always loved to read and write even through those careers when I was writing computer programs rather than fiction! And best wishes for your writing career too. (We have the same first name!)
