Story Length Guideline

July 3, 2014

So you’ve decided to write a novella, or to try your hand at flash fiction. Here’s an easy guide to let you know when you’ve hit your word count.

 Fiction

  • Flash fiction or micro fiction: under 500 words (2 pages)
  • Short story:  1000 to 10,000 words (4 to 40 pages)
  • Novella: 10,000 to 50,000 words (40 to 200 pages)
  • Novel: 50,000 words or more (200+ pages)

A novel which utilizes a 12 point font will have 250-300 words per page. Therefore, a 55,000 word book should be about 200 manuscript pages. A 100,000 word book would be about 400.
