How to Persevere When the World is Telling You to Quit
I was recently asked by Tina Bustamante, one of my writer friends, to write a guest post for her blog. After batting around a couple of topic ideas, we arrived at one that we both know all too intimately: “How to Keep Going When There are no Visible Signs of Success”.
As writers, we’ve both been down long stretches of road with no signs to encourage us or to let us know how much longer it would be until we’d reach our destination. It’s not easy to keep going under these circumstances, especially on those days when your tank is getting low. You don’t have to be a writer to relate to the feeling of hopelessness that seems inevitable under these circumstances.
What do you do to rev up your engines? One of my favorite tactics is to look to others for inspiration. For example, my friend Sylvia Stewart began her writing journey as a missionary in Africa back in 1978. In 1986, she began writing her first novel, “Kondi’s Quest”, and in 2011, this novel was published by Oak Tara. That was a long road to her publishing destination, and I’m sure she had many times when she was tempted to pack it all in. What would have happened if Sylvia had given up? She would never have achieved her goal of publication, and the world would have been deprived of Kondi’s story.
Sylvia didn’t give up, and that inspires me.
