Book Review: “DawnSinger” by Janalyn Voigt (enter to win a free copy!)

August 16, 2012

Fantasy…suspense…romance…and horses with wings.

All that and more awaits in this epic adventure by Janalyn Voigt.

“Janalyn Voigt is a fresh voice in the realm of fantasy. Her writing is crisp, her verbs muscular, and it’s all wrapped up in a lyrical style. Blending action and romance, DawnSinger is a journey through fear, failure, and faith, and I look forward to its sequel.”

 – Eric Wilson, NY Times bestselling author of “Valley of Bones” and “One Step Away”

In “DawnSinger”, book 1 of Janalyn Voigt’s Tales of Faeraven series, the heroine, Shae, is summoned to the deathbed of the High Queen for reasons she doesn’t quite understand. Her brother Kai, acting as her guardian and escort, reveals to Shae that she is in danger, but offers little detail.  It soon becomes clear that some dark force is out to destroy her, and it is up to Kai to keep her safe.

Dark visions, epic battles, fantastic beasts, and an unlikely romance await the reader of this beautifully written,  allegorical fantasy. Janalyn Voigt has created a world rich in beauty and intrigue. Her characters are strong and well-developed, and her story well-paced. While I wanted to take my time dwelling on such poetic descriptions as “Golden morning light fell across the faen and in the near distance touched broken marble pillars flanking a wide stair”, I felt a pull to press on to the next adventure. This is a story that drew me in, not only to the lives of the characters but to their world.

I recommend this book to readers who love fantasy, adventure, and intelligent writing.

Yes. She does a fantastic job of building the suspense. I’m learning a lot about writing description from her as well. She’s good!

A good book, by a good author, from another good author, with a gift card for a good place to read it? Put my name in that hat!

The books sounds wonderful! It is so hard to find a truly good read. And with teenagers who love to read, I am always looking for books that I feel comfortable passing on to them. This sounds like a great option. Thanks, Leslie–you have suggested many of my summer reads!

I’m happy to hear that, Kathy. This is a terrific book for teens, even though it’s geared toward adults. So many teens love fantasy and it’s great for them to have good quality options.
